Case study
Every year, Fortune Magazine highlights the 100 best places to work in the US, as rated by the Great Place to Work Institute. In and amongst the many benefits each organization offers, there often can be found the element of empowerment. Southwest Airlines, who for years topped the list, gave employees free rein to give customers a fun flying experience and industry-leading customer service.
Guideline for Design
So, what can be done within the designer’s trade to impart a sense of empowerment to users? Within the phases of development that normally bring about any new product or service, there can be found pockets of opportunity. To simplify the discussion, only two will be examined here: the initial planning process itself, and the selection of final elements or features for the final product. Regardless of which point is considered, there is only one general guideline to be applied: Include the end user in the decision-making.
